A take on Journalism
Should we change our understanding of Journalism?
I was reading about 2025 Pulitzer Prizes on Hacker News. If you notice, most of the winners are funded news corps under category of Public Service, Breaking news reporting, … Feature Photography, Audio Reporting. Still feels circa 2000s.
The journalism has changed a lot in recent years (post COVID). There are independent news sources on YouTube & Podcasts - which may / may not be well funded - but have more viewers/audience compared to conventional news sources - paper / TV.
Few popular documentary content creators on YouTube (as of 5/8/2025): Astrum - 2.42M, Free Documentary - 5.47M, Part-Time Explorer - 429K (but some videos have crossed few millions of views), Real Stories - 6.53M & many more. Similarly if you look up we can find Podcasts as well. Also, there are more realtime news stories continuously streamed on social channels like X, Facebook, Instagram etc.,
When do we see boards like Pulizer are going to consider social journalism? Why are they sticking to conventional media outlets? Why can’t we recognize those tireless folks on social media? How about acknowledging them?
Let me know your thoughts!
